The worst book you’ve read in the last year.
If we go with 2013 only, that would be Our Tragic Universe by Scarlett Thomas. I reviewed it a couple of weeks ago, here.
For a truly boring book, however, we have to go back to October/November 2012. A book so dull I named it as one of my top five worst reads of all time. The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers. There is no riddle, it’s just about sand.
Somehow this book appeared in a very nice set of ten crime classics. I’m not sure I would call it crime, and it isn’t much of a thriller. Most of the actual spy plot happens in just a few pages at the end. So there was a small reward for reading over 100 pages about two companions sailing around some islands and frequently getting beached on sandbanks. A vast amount of prose was devoted to talk about maps and charts too. A great shame, because it had its moments of excitement. Just not my cup of tea.
